WhistlePig Whiskey, Vermont’s premier pioneer of independent craft rye, has officially announced its boldest expansion to date: the grand opening of The Vault by WhistlePig. Located in the heart of downtown Louisville at 403 East Market Street, the permanent outpost sits strategically between Whiskey Row and the historic NuLu district, directly challenging Kentucky’s long-standing bourbon dominance.

Housed inside a meticulously restored 1911 security bank building, the interactive destination seamlessly bridges classic architecture with WhistlePig’s signature non-conformist flair. The flagship space features soaring ceilings, limestone columns, and a custom blending bar designed to immerse local whiskey purists and international tourists alike in the versatile world of rye.

The Boss Hog XII: Feather & Flame Takes Center Stage

Coinciding with the opening, Lead Research Distiller Mitch Mahar showcased the brand’s commitment to relentless liquid experimentation with an inside look at The Boss Hog XII: Feather & Flame. This ultra-premium, single-barrel, cask-strength straight rye whiskey draws deep inspiration from ancient Mesoamerican traditions, standing as the world’s first rye finished in complex pulque curado de cacao barrels.

The well-aged liquid honors the sacred Aztec beverages of pulque (agave sap fermentation) and xocolatl (chili chocolate), resulting in an extraordinary flavor arc:

  • The Nose: Decadent layers of rich caramel, dark chocolate, and bright orange zest.
  • The Palate: A vibrant burst of sweet citrus expertly balanced by toasted American oak, velvety cocoa, and an underlying wave of earthy spice.
  • The Finish: A bold, multi-layered exit where savory cacao gives way to an herbaceous kick of native chili pepper heat.

Making Pigs Fly: Pneumatic Cocktails & Private Tastings

Under the leadership of General Manager Kevin Didio, The Vault provides an elevated, high-energy alternative to traditional distillery tours. Guests can pull up a seat at the lively Bank Lobby Bar to order the establishment’s viral signature cocktail, The Flying Pig—a premium concoction physically propelled to patrons through a playful overhead pneumatic “ATM tube” system.

For serious collectors and enthusiasts, the location offers highly exclusive, structured tasting flights behind the original steel bank vault door. These private sessions employ a curated “wine-and-cheese” approach to spirits storytelling, granting visitors direct access to sample single barrels, historic archives, and rare warehouse experimental liquids that cannot be found anywhere else globally.
