Have you heard of Sagamore Spirits? If not, listen to our podcast featuring them here. They’ve led the charge in reviving Maryland-style rye whiskey, a style some argue is the true home of rye. Originally sourcing their whiskey, Sagamore Spirits now crafts great pours at their stunning Baltimore, MD, distillery. In this latest review, I explore their 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond Rye Whiskey—a 100-proof aged for seven years. Let’s break down what this pour brings to the glass.
Just The Facts:
- Price: $59.99
- Proof: 100
- Age: 7-Years-old
- Mashbill: Blend of High and Low Rye Mashbills
- Style: Rye Whiskey
Tasting Notes:7-Year Bottled-in-Bond
- Nose: The nose on this whiskey is right up my alley; it is very dessert-like, which I wasn’t expecting. The waves of milk chocolate capture me right up front. As I thought about this whiskey, I built what this dessert would be in my head. The food I built? Brownies with lemon custard and mint whipped cream. As I continued to search for flavors, a touch of barrel influence and nuttiness rounded out the nose.
- Palate: The first sip didn’t match what I got on the nose. It was very drying on the palate with a slight hint of bitter, flamed citrus. While the nose has a milk chocolate note, the palate carries more of vanilla and caramel notes. These two key flavors were buoyed by complex mouthfeel.
- Finish: The finish was slightly bitter from the citrus and very drying. What is very interesting is that milk chocolate comes back at the end of this sip. Which takes you right back to the glass for one more drink.
Final Verdict
I enjoy rye whiskey and think it is more to my palate. I like this pour as it’s a blend of two mashbills. This provides a contrast to the traditional 95/5 that most people are used to drinking over the years. If you want a deep and complex sipping rye, I think this pour has good value.
