Broken Barrel Whiskey: Luciferous American Single Malt

It is always good to connect with Seth Benhaim of Broken Barrel Whiskey, not just because he allows us to try killer whiskey but mainly because, Seth and the Bourbon Lens have grown up together the last several years since the brand has launched. It is great to see where Broken Barrel is continuing to push the envelope and this single barrel release is no different.

While catching up with Seth during our Best of Kentucky Bourbon Festival Interview we got to sample Luciferous.  The name may be intimidating but I promise you the whiskey is not.

Just the Facts:

Proof: 122.6

Mash Bill: Single Malt Barley

Style: Finished American Single Malt Whiskey

Source: Indiana

Oak Bill: 80% ex-Amaro casks / 20% French Oak

Jake’s Tasting Notes:

Color: Mahogany

Nose: The single malt is hard to miss at first sniff, but you quickly arrive with flavors of French Oak spice and amaro (which is very florally).  The balance of spices balances nicely with the freshness of the more herbal notes.

Palate:  The whiskey is very clean, while it may be 122.6 proof it has good, rounded body to it with not much harshness. The cinnamon and floral notes give way to hint of citrus which lingers well into you drinking experience.  The last thing I will say is there is a creaminess to this which coats the palate that makes you want to continue to grab this drink. I think the name speaks for itself when you continue to drink it.

Finish: Soft, yet lingering hints or citrus and caramel

Closing Thoughts

When talking with Seth during our interview at KBF he mentioned this might be the first American Single Malt Whiskey done in Amaro cask from what I could find on Google he looks to be right.  If you would like to try this unique whiskey there are limited bottles of this available on Tastersclub.com for $69.99 .
