With the Kentucky Derby this weekend, I’m proposing a recipe for a mint julep. Instead of buying a premade mix, it’s easy to make a homemade simple syrup with one part water and one part sugar. However, I like to tweak this a bit and go with a brown sugar mint-infused syrup.
Corey’s Simple Syrup Recipe:
– 1 cup water
– 1 cup brown sugar
– 1 handful of spearmint leaves
Bring the water and sugar mixture to a boil, whisking until combined well. Then, add the leaves and remove from heat. Let sit for 30 minutes to cool, and it’s ready!
Now all we need is bourbon! But which one to choose?
My go-to this year is going to be Elijah Craig Small Batch. At 94 proof, there’s no shame in having a few of these at the Derby party, and the flavors match up well.
Corey’s Tasting Notes: EC Mint Julep
Palate: this is balanced and approachable; not too hot for a beginner bourbon drinker. There isn’t a particularly dominant flavor in any of the typical tasting categories (wood, grain, sweet, spice, or fruit/floral). I find representation of each with subtle notes of new oak, vanilla, potpourri, black pepper, and rye. All are subtle and come together well, and they have plenty of room for the added sweetness from the mint syrup.
Finish: medium, with a gentle Kentucky hug
