In this week’s episode of the Bourbon Lens Podcast we sat down with Jackie Zykan and Nate Winegar of Hidden Barn. In honor of the podcast release we will be sharing a review of Series One – Batch Five and Series Two – Batch One. These two whiskies are nothing alike, they are two different mashbills from two different distilleries. What is alike however, is the depth and complexity to which they are blended! As always, let’s dive in to find out more!
Just the facts: Series One – Batch Five
- Proof: 106
- Age: 4 to 5 years
- Mashbill: 70% corn/ 20% rye/ 10% malted barley
- Distillery: Neely Family Distillery
Just the facts: Series Two – Batch One

Jake’s Tasting Notes: Series One – Batch Five
Nose: Sweet, grainy, vanilla, and baked apples
Palate: Cinnamon sugar, grain, and baked apples
Finish: Sweet, grain-forward finish that is drying on the palate. Lingers with you for a medium to long finish.
Jake’s Tasting Notes: Series Two – Batch One
Nose: Smoke, brown sugar, and pipe tobacco
Palate: Tobacco, pit smoke, brown sugar, orange zest and pepper
Finish: This pour screams “take me to a BBQ” from start to finish. The flavors linger for a long, enjoyable finish.
Closing Thoughts
I had previously only had Hidden Barn while at Kentucky Bourbon Festival in 2022. It was great to sit down with the pours while not dealing with 90 degree heat. What I will say is the team does a great job blending to make the whiskey distinctly theirs. I really enjoyed both batches, Series Two – Batch One just made me hungry. I will go with that as my favorite, for the record I have eaten BBQ often since this episode!
