We’re talking Jack Daniel’s this week on the Bourbon Lens. Our most recent podcast features Nelson Eddy, Jack Daniel’s Historian. You should listen by clicking here. Now, let us talk whiskey. I am obviously partial to Kentucky Bourbon, but as a consumer of whiskey you cannot ignore what is happening in Lynchburg, TN. With the recent release of Jack Daniel’s 12 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey, I was very interested to see what this extended age would do to the traditional Jack Daniel’s that I am used to. Let’s dive into this Tennessee Whiskey.
Just the Facts:
- Proof: 107
- Age: 12
- Mash Bill: 80% Corn, 12% Malted Barley, 8% rye
- Style: Tennessee Whiskey
- MSRP: $80.00
Jake’s Tasting Notes: Jack Daniel’s 12 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey
Nose: Herbal notes of tea and honey, vanilla, and oak.
Palate: First things first, it is absent of the traditional banana note. Mocha and brown sugar that mimic brownie batter on my palate.
Finish: Subtle, but impactful. The chocolate flavor stays with you.
Closing Thoughts
When I think of Jack Daniel’s, I have come to expect notes of banana. However, this whiskey is anything but banana. The flavors are rich and impactful. I would put this against some of my favorite 12 year old Kentucky Bourbons, such as Elijah Craig Barrel Proof or Lux Row 12 Double Barrel.
