Kentucky Peerless – Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey – 3 Year Single Barrel

Background:

Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. was originally incorporated in 1907 in Henderson, KY by business man Henry H Kraver. Like so many other distilleries, Peerless ceased production in 1917 due to the passing of the 18thAmendment, Prohibition. The company lay dormant for more than 100 years until Mr. Kravers great grandson, Corky Taylor, had an idea and vision to revitalize his family’s brand. In 2014, Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. began reconstruction on an old building in the heart of Whiskey Row in Louisville, KY where the distillery can be visited by tourists today. On March 15th, 2015, for the first time since 1917, Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. was back to be a fully operational brand, filling the first barrel since the company went out of business almost 100 years before. Today, Peerless produces Rye and Bourbon whiskey, with their Rye whiskey receiving high remarks from Whiskey Advocate and being named in the top 20 whiskeys of the year in 2017.

Cost:

$120 – Can be found lower in liquor stores. I acquired this bottle at the distillery.

Proof: 110.5

How this whiskey was consumed:

Neat; Glencairn

Nose:

Toffee, ginger bread, stone fruits, mint, herbal tea, and baking spice

Palate:

Very rich and oily mouthfeel that is sweet up front, then gives way to very earthy notes: rich oak, baking spices, and leather. The finish is long and complex with flavors of tobacco, black pepper, and licorice that linger on the palate for quite some time.

Overall Thoughts:

I think this is a great Rye whiskey for only being 3 years old. As Peerless is a young, born again company, their products are still relatively young. As their whiskey ages, the younger age statements disappear, never to be released again. As they continue to get older and get more engagement with the barrel, I think Peerless is only going to get better and better. They definitely believe in their process of making whiskey and will continue to operate how they see fit, and that’s what we love about the brand. If you are looking for a whiskey that’s going to display nicely on your bar, and surprise your friends, we think this is a home run.

Rating:

I am a fan of this one, definite buy for me. Will be looking forward to adding a 4 year Rye soon!
