Knob Creek 18 is hitting markets across the country. How will one the oldest of the age-stated bourbons fare after its sister bottlings, Knob Creek 12 and 15, received much praise. The great thing about this product line is that it has been reasonably priced for the age statements it carries and this release is no different.
Just the Facts:
Proof: 100
Age: 18 years old
Mash Bill: Undisclosed
Style: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
MSRP: 169.99
Jake’s Tasting Notes: Knob Creek 18
Color: Shiny Cooper
Nose: Brown sugar with a hint of nuttiness. Finishing off with a bit of cinnamon spice and oak.
Palate: Very easy drinker right off the bat. I often find that the second sip of a whiskey is going to tell me the story. I find that to be true with this pour as well. Vanilla extract, the expected oak tannins, and baking spices continue to warm the palate.
Finish: Medium in length; the notes on the palate expand with the finish.
Closing Thoughts
I always worry about bourbon being over oaked at 18 to 20 years old. However, this one is just right; it’s balanced by the proof point because of the water used to proof down this bourbon. While there is a small hint of nuttiness, the traditional “Beam Notes” are not present and this pour begins to take on a life of its own. I will need to a do a blind tasting with the 12 and 15 Year releases against the newest member of the Knob Creek family.
