This new distillery, part of Isle of Arran Distillers, brings heavily peated whisky back to the Isle of Arran, located off Scotland’s western shore. The new core range includes the Kilmory Edition (46% ABV; 700ml; $74.99 SRP) and the Corriecravie Edition (55% ABV; 700ml; $99.99 SRP), available nationwide this month.
Rich Heritage and Modern Craftsmanship
- Historical Significance: LAGG Distillery, opened in 2019, revives the tradition of heavily peated whisky on the Isle of Arran, which ceased with the closure of the last legal distillery in 1837. This new venture complements Isle of Arran Distillers’ first distillery, Lochranza, known for its unpeated whiskies since 1995.
- Kilmory Edition: This expression is matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels, featuring a vibrant, fresh profile with earthy smokiness and vanilla notes. Bottled at 46% ABV, it has no added coloring or chill filtration, ensuring an authentic taste experience.
- Corriecravie Edition: After initial maturation in bourbon barrels, this edition finishes for about six months in Oloroso sherry hogsheads from Miguel Martin in Jerez. Bottled at 55% ABV, it balances peat and spice with sweet smoke and rich fruit notes, without chill filtration or added coloring.
- Isle of Arran: Often described as “Scotland in Miniature,” the island offers diverse scenery from mountains and glens to lochs and castles, reflecting the complexity of whiskies produced both in the northern Lochranza and the southern LAGG distilleries.
