SAN FRANCISCO (June 25, 2024) – Born and bred in San Francisco since 1993, Old Potrero is recognized as the first American craft whiskey in the U.S. post-Prohibition. San Francisco’s artisanal spirits producer, Hotaling & Co., announces the reintroduction of Old Potrero 18th Century Style Whiskey, now called Old Potrero Toasted Barrel Whiskey. Distilled in a small copper pot still from 100% rye malt, this whiskey is aged in new, toasted, 24-month air-dried, handmade, extra-fine grain American White Oak barrels for a minimum of 6 years. The release will take place on Thursday, July 4, commemorating American Independence Day and celebrating America’s leadership in craft whiskey distilling.
Old Potrero Toasted Barrel Whiskey
Old Potrero Toasted Barrel Whiskey is crafted to honor traditional 18th-century barrel-making techniques where barrels are lightly toasted rather than charred. This unique process provides a distinct flavor profile, setting it apart as the only rye whiskey aged entirely in toasted oak barrels.

Old Potrero Toasted Barrel Whiskey is aged for a minimum of 6 years, with an ABV of 51.2%, available in 700ml bottles, and priced at $64.99 SRP.
Historical Significance
“America’s first great whiskey was rye, traditionally made in copper pot stills,” says Noah Rothbaum, author of The Art of American Whiskey. “Anchor Distilling, now Hotaling & Co., revived rye whiskey in the late 20th century with Old Potrero Whiskey, which continues to be made in copper pot stills.”
Master Distiller Bruce Joseph explains, “We reintroduce Old Potrero Toasted Barrel Whiskey at an older age than the original, maintaining its uniqueness as the only rye whiskey aged entirely in toasted oak barrels.”
Commitment to Artisanal Excellence
Dan Leese, CEO of Hotaling & Co., states, “Old Potrero Whiskey, like San Francisco, embodies boldness and innovation. This reintroduction continues our legacy of artisanal excellence and the rich history of American whiskey.”
