Russell’s Reserve 13 Year – Does it still hold up?

It’s been almost a year since this Russell’s Reserve 13 2022 arrived at casa Lewellen, right on the heels of the hype train that dubbed this one of, if not the best bourbon in 2021.  While I hold this bottle in high esteem as I write this I can’t exactly remember anything about it.  Think for a second do you remember your favorite pour of whiskey or least favorite for that matter you have this one tasting note that strikes you as unforgettable whether positive or negative.

As I sit down to write this review let’s review the stats:

Proof: 114.8

Age Statement: 13 years, speculation is it has much older stock

Bottle Color: Blue and White (not that it matters but it’s almost football season so Go Cats!)

Jake’s tasting notes

Color: Burnt caramel

Nose: As one would expect at 13 years old the oak does comes first, but pushing through is a fresh vanilla and citrus that makes your crave more! The more it sets the more intense the flavors become!

Palate: you are met at the first sip of oak tannin.  The full bodied flavor and creamy mouth feel quickly makes me recall why this bourbon was acclaimed.  As you continue to take sips oakiness hits the tip of the palate but is followed by caramel and waves of vanilla.

Finish: Long, oaky and tannic
