ATLANTA [March 20, 2026] – Atlanta-based Shortbarrel, a leader in independent craft spirits, has announced the online-exclusive launch of Afterswarm Meadowfoam. This third release in the acclaimed “Afterswarm” series marks a first-of-its-kind innovation: a rye whiskey finished in barrels conditioned with rare Meadowfoam honey from Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

Innovation Through “Structural Finishing”

Master Blender Clinton Dugan designed Afterswarm Meadowfoam to push the boundaries of honey-finishing. Rather than adding honey directly to the whiskey, the team used Meadowfoam honey—known for its toasted marshmallow and vanilla profile—to condition new American Oak barrels from Kelvin Cooperage.

After the honey was dumped, a blend of 6-to-13-year-old rye whiskeys (sourced from MGP and Green River) was introduced for a secondary maturation of nearly 12 months in the Atlanta heat. The result is a whiskey that utilizes honey for texture and aromatic depth rather than simple sugar-sweetness.

Tasting Profile

Bottled at 108.6 proof and non-chill filtered, the 95% rye mashbill offers a complex interplay of flavors:

  • Nose: Vanilla cream, honeycomb, toasted marshmallow, and polished oak.
  • Palate: Dense rye spice transitioning into brûléed sugar, dark florals, and citrus oil.
  • Finish: Lingering baking spice, raw honey, and toasted coconut with a dry oak warmth.

“Afterswarm Meadowfoam is meant to be a special-occasion sipper that bridges the brand’s technical whiskey credibility with an approachable, but nuanced finishing profile,” the brand stated.

Availability

Shortbarrel Afterswarm Meadowfoam is an online-only release, available exclusively at www.shortbarrelbourbon.com for $114.99. Due to the nature of the Meadowfoam honey-conditioned barrels, this is a highly limited production.
