Over the years, the Bourbon Lens has been able to connect with the Bruce Joseph from Old Potrero numerous times. When news of the 16 year old single barrel Old Potrero broke in April, I reached out immediately to see if any samples would be available of this extremely limited run of 432 bottles. Lucky for us, we were able to secure a sample and taste this unique 16 year old malted rye whiskey. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Tasting Notes: Old Potrero 16 Year Bottled In Bond
Nose: I would like to first note that this offering smells extremely different from the traditional 6 year offering. It has more rich and fruity notes. On the nose pear, honey, vanilla and citrus zest. The combination brings fruit cocktail to mind.
Palate: Pear, vanilla and citrus hit you on the first sip. As it opens up, the oak and honey start to make this pour more nuanced. Finally, the barrel tannins start to come in on the third sip with a wave of maltiness from the grain.
Finish: Lingering barrel spice, vanilla and malt.
Closing Thoughts:
This is a whiskey most people won’t get to try. However, this is going to be hard to beat for “Rye Whiskey of the Year” in my book. I know we are early on in the year, but this malted rye whiskey is something that just hits right with my palate.
