FRANKFORT, KY (January 29, 2025) – Buffalo Trace Distillery proudly announces the 26th release from its Experimental Collection, titled Spirits Distilled from Grain and Hops. This groundbreaking release demonstrates the distillery’s dedication to innovation by merging whiskey craftsmanship with ingredients typically used in beer production. The result? A unique, hoppy spirit crafted to excite whiskey and beer enthusiasts alike.
A Decade-Long Experiment in Flavor
Inspired by the rise of hop-forward beers, Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley began experimenting over ten years ago, infusing raw distillate with two distinct hops:
- Saaz Noble Hops: A traditional Czechoslovakian variety, known for its use in Bohemian pilsners.
- Zythos® Hops: An American variety with tropical and herbal flavor profiles.
These hops were infused into a raw distillate for 30 minutes before being distilled and aged in charred white oak casks for 11 years and 7 months.
“Hoppy beers are a playground for brewers; there are many techniques used to capture different flavors,” explains Wheatley. “It inspired us to play around with this essential beer ingredient. Thanks to the eleven-plus years of aging, the hop aroma and flavors are evident while providing a balanced bitterness that blends well with the spirit’s oaky whiskey character.”
Flavor Profile
Spirits Distilled from Grain and Hops is bottled at 90 proof and offers a vibrant, dynamic tasting experience:
- Nose: Bright, hoppy notes with citrus and herbal aromas, complemented by creamy vanilla and seasoned oak undertones.
- Palate: Lively citrus flavors—lemon and orange zest—combine with fresh herbal notes and robust oak.
- Finish: Clean and refreshing with a perfect balance of hops and whiskey character.
A Spirit for Experimentation
While the spirit can be savored neat, Wheatley encourages fans to experiment with cocktails.
“A hopped spirit creates a unique cocktail experience. Test it out in a Manhattan and move from there. Curiosity is key,” he says.
The Experimental Collection
Buffalo Trace’s Experimental Collection showcases the distillery’s commitment to pushing boundaries. With more than 30,000 experimental barrels aging, this program explores variations in mash bills, barrel toasts, and other production methods. Not every experiment makes the cut, but those that do are released in limited quantities.
“At the core of our Experimental Collection is a passion for pushing boundaries and creating unforgettable drinking experiences for our fans,” says Andrew Duncan, Global Director at Buffalo Trace Distillery. “Release #26 merges the worlds of beer and whiskey in an exciting way. Beer lovers will appreciate the bold hoppiness, while discovering the depth of its whiskey-like qualities.”
Limited Availability
Spirits Distilled from Grain and Hops will be available starting late January 2025 in limited quantities at the Buffalo Trace Distillery gift shop. Each bottle is offered at $46.99 for a 375ml bottle.
