In honor of the 119th anniversary of the 1906 Earthquake, Hotaling & Co. announces the annual release of Old Potrero Hotaling’s 13-Year-Old Bottled in Bond Rye Whiskey. This limited-edition whiskey (50% ABV, 700ml, $199 SRP) pays tribute to the city’s pioneering spirit and the historic survival of A.P. Hotaling’s whiskey warehouse, which remarkably withstood the devastating quake and fire that destroyed much of San Francisco.
This year’s release—aged for 13 years in once-used, charred fine-grain American oak barrels—will be available ahead of the April 18 anniversary at Old Potrero’s online store and in select fine spirits retailers. “We release a very limited amount of Hotaling’s Whiskey each year, based on when we believe the spirit is at its peak,” says Head Distiller Kevin Aslan, who joined Old Potrero the same year this expression was barreled. “This year, we loved the distinctive flavors of sandalwood, stone fruit, and orange flower water that developed over 13 years.”

The History Behind Hotaling’s Whiskey & the 1906 Earthquake
The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and resulting fire destroyed more than 28,000 buildings, but one structure remained miraculously intact—A.P. Hotaling’s whiskey warehouse. While many saw the disaster as divine punishment, one San Francisco writer captured the irony of the moment with a now-famous verse:
“If, as they say, God spanked the town
For being over frisky,
Why did He burn the churches down
And save Hotaling’s whiskey?”
