Scott’s Tasting Notes: Barrell Batch 004 Rye Whiskey
- Nose: apricot and apples initially and leading to bergamot/Earl Grey tea
- Palate: lemon, vanilla custard, and creamy. The spice hits and remains as the fruitiness fades.
- Finish: lingering spiciness and heat that are very warming.
Closing Thoughts
Barrell Rye Batch 004 has a very appetizing nose that’s has a unique Earl Grey and black tea aroma. While I don’t typically lean toward rye whiskey due to an all too common grassiness, this blend introduces a good amount of fruit and sweetness that is both enjoyable and diverse. Batch 004 rye combines 5.5 year old whiskey with some older aged rye that adds complexity while avoiding my “dreaded” fresh grass clipping note that I tend to associate with rye whiskey.
