Battle of Two Barton 1792 Heavyweights – Bourbon Review

two bottles of 1792 (sweet wheat and aged 12 years)

In Bourbon Lens Episode 303: A Deep Dive with Ross Cornelissen, we sat down with the Master Distiller of 1792 Bourbon. During the episode, we sipped on two exceptional pours from Barton 1792: Sweet Wheat and Aged Twelve Years. In our latest review for Bourbon Lens, I taste these two whiskeys and see which one comes out on top!

Just the Facts On The Two Bottles:

1792 Sweet Wheat:
  • Style: Wheated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • Age: Undisclosed
  • Price: $46.99 SRP
  • Proof: 91.2
1792 Aged Twelve Years

Tasting Notes On The Two Bottles:

1792 Sweet Wheat:
  • Nose: the nose is sweet as the name states. It has notes of vanilla, cream of wheat, cinnamon sugar, and a red cream soda.
  • Palate: a light punch of flavor, creamy mouthfeel, super sweet on the palate. It has notes of raspberry and cream cheese frosting to make it very dessert like.
  • Finish: lingering sweetness with hints of red cream soda.
1792 Aged Twelve Years:
  • Nose: powdered sugar, frosting, fig, sweet oak, tobacco and mint.
  • Palate: cocoa powder, oak, honey and confectionery sugar. The stone fruit carries over in the back of the palate.
  • Finish: sweet oak and tobacco

Closing Thoughts & Winner

Let’s be honest, 1792 is producing so many value buys even within their limited release portfolio. Both of these bourbons are very tasty but I lean towards the richer complexity of the Aged Twelve Years. What’s your favorite Barton 1792 bottling?
