POULTNEY, VT — BHAKTA Spirits, renowned as the world’s preeminent House of Vintages, proudly announces the launch of its inaugural international whisky, BHAKTA 2012 Indian Single Malt Whisky (SRP $149). This luxury limited release, one of the first single vintage whiskies produced in India, represents the brand’s vision of cross-cultural curation and marks a significant milestone in craft spirits innovation.
A Heritage of Excellence
BHAKTA 2012 Indian Single Malt Whisky pays homage to the whisky-forward heritage of Raj Peter Bhakta, the brand’s founder. Bhakta, a first-generation American entrepreneur of Indian and Irish descent, made a name in the spirits industry by pioneering the rye whiskey renaissance with WhistlePig Whiskey. Now, BHAKTA Spirits takes his legacy forward by introducing a single vintage Indian whisky that stands as a testament to India’s emerging position in the global craft spirits arena.
A Journey from India to Vermont
Born from the grain-rich fields of Northern India and distilled in the tropical landscapes of Goa, BHAKTA 2012 Indian Single Malt Whisky is among the oldest whiskies ever produced in India. After aging for over a decade in non-climate controlled rickhouses, this exquisite vintage journeyed to BHAKTA-GRISWOLD Campus in Poultney, Vermont. Here, it underwent an additional 131 days of finishing in French oak casks, previously used for BHAKTA 1982 Armagnac, enhancing its complexity and depth.
Tasting Notes and Profile
Offered at cask strength (113.8 proof), BHAKTA 2012 Indian Single Malt Whisky is a sensory delight. It exhibits a topaz hue with aromas of cardamom, cacao, tropical fruits, and a hint of smoke. The palate reveals a malty sweetness intertwined with roasted chestnut, toasted oak, and peat smoke, concluding with a long, vibrant finish featuring marmalade and smoke/peat.
The Rise of Indian Whisky
Indian single malt whisky, distilled from 100% 6-row malted barley, has gained international acclaim, often surpassing traditional Scotch in flavor complexity. BHAKTA Spirits, in collaboration with Craig Henriques of Goa-based Ocean King Distillers, unearthed some of India’s oldest single malts to create this vintage masterpiece, reflecting the robust and well-defined identity of Indian whisky.
Founder’s Vision and Future Releases
BHAKTA Spirits continues Raj Peter Bhakta’s pioneering mission to curate and release the world’s most exquisite spirits. The launch of BHAKTA 2012 Indian Single Malt Whisky signifies the beginning of an annual series of curated single vintage Indian whiskies, expanding the brand’s portfolio and offering whisky enthusiasts a taste of India’s rich distilling tradition.
