Blue Run Spirits just announced its second release in their series of rye whiskey – Blue Run Emerald Rye Whiskey. This is the first Blue Run Rye Whiskey to be contract distilled by Blue Run Liquid Advisor Jim Rutledge at Castle & Key Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Blue Run Whiskey Director Shaylyn Gammon was tasked with blending Emerald from 189 barrels and determined this should be bottled at barrel proof. We were fortunate enough to be sent a sample of this whiskey with no strings attached for purposes of review, so let’s get into it.
Just the Facts:
Proof: 116.7
Age: Undisclosed
Mash Bill: Undisclosed; a blend of 3 rye whiskey mashbills
Style: Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey
Distilled by: Jim Rutledge at Castle & Key Distillery (Frankfort, KY)
MSRP: $109.99
Scott’s Tasting Notes: Emerald Rye Whiskey
Color: Shiny Copper
Nose: Anise, Licorice, Fresh Chopped Herbs, Develops into more rich caramel and vanilla notes with additional time in the glass.
Palate: This one is thick and rich with a strong proofy punch. It is not overwhelming but definitely enough to warm you up. The fresh chopped herbs continued to the palate with a surprising basil note. This one finished with notes of Goetze’s Old-Fashioned Caramel Creams (one of my favorite candies as a kid).
Finish: Warming and medium in length with spicy remnants.
Closing Thoughts
I am not typically a Rye Whiskey drinker, but this “Kentucky Style Rye” suits my palate preference for sweeter notes. While I did find the note of basil to be a very interesting one, this whiskey did not have the typical grassiness that I tend to avoid in rye whiskey. Being left with richer caramel cream notes had this traditional bourbon drinker seeking another pour of this rye whiskey.
This release, like most from Blue Run, will likely sell out online. If you are interested, Blue Run Emerald Rye is now available at select retailers in the United States and online at BlueRunSpirits.com beginning at 3:00 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, November 15.
