Where did Bourbon start in Kentucky? The city of Georgetown, KY. invites you to explore the history of bourbon.
GEORGETOWN, KY – June 11, 2025 – Georgetown, Kentucky, proudly introduces Bourbon Genesis, a new campaign inviting bourbon enthusiasts and history lovers to explore the birthplace of America’s native spirit. This initiative celebrates Georgetown’s pivotal role in bourbon’s history, where Reverend Elijah Craig first distilled bourbon in 1789.
“Bourbon Genesis is more than a campaign, it’s a pilgrimage to where bourbon began,” said Lori Saunders, executive director of the Georgetown/Scott County Tourism Commission.
The Historic Roots of Bourbon
At the heart of Georgetown lies Royal Spring Park, where Elijah Craig, a Baptist preacher and pioneering distiller, crafted bourbon using limestone-rich spring water. In 1789, Craig revolutionized whiskey-making by aging it in new charred oak barrels, creating bourbon’s signature amber hue and flavors of caramel, vanilla, and spice. This process remains the cornerstone of bourbon production today.
