Islay Distillery’s First Rye Whisky Showcases Innovation and Sustainability.
Bruichladdich Distillery has introduced The Laddie Rye, a new limited-edition rye whisky crafted entirely on Islay and available exclusively in the United States. This latest release represents a milestone for the innovative distillery, known for pushing the boundaries of Scotch whisky production and sustainability.
Distilled from Islay-Grown Rye and Barley
Aged for seven years and bottled at 50% ABV, The Laddie Rye was matured in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels and first-fill Virgin American Oak casks. The Virgin Oak casks were toasted rather than charred, a deliberate choice to highlight the peppery spice and aromatic depth of Islay-grown rye while retaining Bruichladdich’s signature fruity and floral house style.
The mash bill combines locally grown rye and Islay malting barley, making Bruichladdich the only distillery on Islay currently producing rye whisky.
Laddie Rye Flavor Profile
The Laddie Rye opens with notes of ground ginger and cracked black pepper, followed by a warm medley of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg. On the palate, the whisky delivers smooth honey and vanilla tones balanced by the natural spice of rye, before finishing with a bright citrus character that ties back to the distillery’s classic style.
A Regenerative Approach to Distilling
Bruichladdich’s exploration of rye stems from both a creative pursuit of flavor and a focus on regenerative agriculture. Rye offers soil-restorative benefits as a rotational crop, supporting long-term biodiversity and sustainability — central pillars of the distillery’s ethos.
