Does Heirloom Corn Make Bourbon Taste Different?

New Riff is always tinkering; whether it’s the news of their latest Sour Mash Single Malt Whiskey, or their Blue Clarage and Yellow Leaming heirloom corn bourbons that were recently released. In today’s review, we will focus on the two new Heirloom Corn Bourbons that were released and we consider whether heirloom corn varietals make the resulting bourbon taste different. Jake’s Tasting Notes – Yellow Leaming

Nose: Slight spice, vanilla, caramel and citrus. Gives traditional New Riff nosing notes.

Palate: Sweet corn bread, fresh peach, and warm cinnamon. Not a typical New Riff palate.

Finish: Short finish with lingering sweetness from the corn.

Jake’s Tasting Notes – Blue Clarage

Nose: Higher spiced than the yellow leaming, caramel and nutmeg. It reminds me of Thanksgiving dessert.

Palate: Has a heavy malt influence on the palate, chocolate and vanilla.

Finish: Lingering hints of chocolate for a medium finish.

Closing Thoughts

I do think the heirloom corn varietals played a large impact on the these two Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskies. I think both pours bring unique flavors, but if I had to pick one, I would lean toward the yellow leaming due to the season we are in. Regardless, both would be a fun pick up to experience heirloom corn bourbon.
