407: Why Heaven Hill’s Double Mash Bourbon Needed Nine Years

Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Double Mash is the only bottled-in-bond blend of two mash bills on the market, according to Heaven Hill’s Adam Edwards. On the latest Bourbon Lens Podcast, recorded at Kentucky Bourbon Festival, Edwards explained how the $49.99 bourbon came together.

“There is no other bottled and bond blend of mash bills on the market. This is one of one,” Edwards said.

What’s in Double Mash bourbon

Double Mash blends about two-thirds Heaven Hill’s traditional bourbon mash bill (78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley) with one-third its wheated mash bill (68% corn, 20% wheat, 12% malted barley). Both are aged nine years and bottled at 100 proof under the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.

Why nine years and not seven

Edwards said rye shows up fast in a four-grain bourbon, while wheat takes years to come forward. “Wheat takes forever,” he said. Two extra years on top of the usual seven gave the wheat time to balance the rye. The result has Old Fitzgerald’s soft mouthfeel up front and rye spice on the finish.

Heaven Hill lists toasted oak, honey and white pepper on the nose. The palate brings honey and citrus oil, then a finish of caramel and baking spice.

How rare is it?

Edwards counted roughly 15,000 American whiskey labels on the market. About 100 are bottled-in-bond, and fewer than 20 of those carry an age statement over four years. “How many are nine years old blend of two bottled and bond mash bills? It’s a one of one,” he said.

Price and availability

Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Double Mash has a suggested price of $49.99. It has been available in limited quantities nationwide since August 2026.

Edwards also covers the Old Fitz and Larceny flavor spectrum, why barrels older than eight years start to “fail,” and why Heaven Hill is adding capacity during the bourbon slowdown.
