There have been some great brands releasing wheated bourbons lately. Whether it Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged or the newest release of National Parks no. 3 from Wyoming Whiskey, there’s no shortage of fine wheated bourbon on the market. With all these exciting releases of late, the best way to share my thoughts is to do a blind tasting of four distinct wheated bourbons.
Blind Taste #1
- Nose: Citrus zest, Werther’s Original caramel and maple syrup
- Palate: slight astringent, brule sugar, walnut, oak, and maple syrup
- Finish: Short, dry finish with a punch caramel
Blind Taste #2
- Nose: bright nose, orange zest, vanilla, hint of pine and white wine
- Palate: Crisp green apple, white pepper, white milk chocolate, and maple syrup
- Finish: Short sharp finish of maple syrup
Blind Taste #3
- Nose: Reminded me of gin on the front end of the nose. Lemon and pine were the first two notes. As it opened up, it was brown sugar and toasted oak which capped a nice rounded nose.
- Palate: Fruity and very drying on the first sip. The fruit notes that show up are apple and plum that are complimented by rich baking spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. With the entire sip having underlying barrel tannin influence
- Finish: Slight astringent medium finish
Blind Taste #4
- Nose: Caramel, dark bitter chocolate and oak
- Palate: bitter, chocolate, cherry, plum, clove and nutmeg
- Finish: Short finish with lingering chocolate
