Scott’s Tasting Notes: Gentleman’s Cut Bourbon
Nose: faint note of warm peaches, caramel, and a tinge of anise and cracked black pepper.
Palate: vanilla cookies (reminds me of the classic cookies from McDonald’s), drying like a cup of hot black tea. When poured over a large ice ball, the caramel and nutty notes really carried the day.
Finish: the finish is short but not lacking in nuttiness and caramel notes.
Closing Thoughts:
When I first saw the announcement of this bourbon, admittedly, I guessed this was another non-descript bottling of MGP Bourbon. Not that there is anything wrong with MGP Bourbon, but it certainly makes it difficult to stand out in today’s marketplace. I was surprised to discover that Stephen Curry, one of the most well known athletes of this generation, had partnered with a Kentucky distillery that is a little off the beaten path. Frankly, I find it admirable that he’s partnered with Boone County Distilling Company. Gentleman’s Cut Bourbon is certainly not your “Big Box Store Bourbon”. If you are looking for another “classic Kentucky Bourbon”, then you may find yourself a bit disappointed. This is a craft whiskey aged for a good amount of time, with a distinct pot still character. If, on the other hand, you are interested in what is going on in the world of craft whiskey, Gentleman’s Cut Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey might be worth exploring.
Interestingly, I preferred this bourbon over ice. This was a bit unexpected for me as I thought the bourbon would suffer from the added dilution. However, the ice brought out a lot more of the nuttiness and caramel notes that may be attractive to regular bourbon drinkers and newbies alike.
