FRANKFORT, KY (August 12, 2025) – Buffalo Trace Distillery is thrilled to announce the John G. Carlisle Cafe, a new permanent dining destination set to open in Spring 2026 on the Distillery’s iconic grounds. Named after U.S. Congressman John G. Open to the public, the cafe requires visitors to check in at the Freehouse welcome building near the visitor parking lot.
Honoring a Legacy: John G. Carlisle

The cafe’s namesake, John G. Carlisle, was instrumental in passing the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, a landmark law that set quality and safety standards for American whiskey. His legacy is deeply tied to Buffalo Trace’s history, as Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. named one of his distilleries after Carlisle. Though the original Carlisle Distillery was demolished in 1936, its legacy lives on. A commemorative plaque and stone from the original building, currently near Guardhouse 1, will be relocated to a flowerbed by the cafe’s entrance as a tribute.
Construction and Opening Details
Construction of the John G. Carlisle Cafe is already underway, with an anticipated opening in Spring 2026. Hours of operation will be announced closer to the launch date, ensuring guests can plan their visits to this exciting new addition.
