Kentucky State University (KSU) and Brough Brothers Distillery have announced a new partnership resulting in the release of 1886 Select, a collection of five Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey varieties.
The collaboration was unveiled during a press conference on July 14 at KSU’s Rufus Ballard Atwood Research Facility, where leaders from both organizations presented research findings on wood stave finishing techniques. “This partnership represents the convergence of academic excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, and Kentucky’s rich bourbon heritage,” said Dr. Koffi Akakpo, president of Kentucky State University.
Five Unique Bourbon Varieties Developed Through Research
The 1886 Select collection features five distinct bourbons, each finished with different toasted wood staves—white oak, maple, walnut, and hickory, along with a control variety. This research, led by Dr. Kirk Pomper, professor of horticulture, studied how various stave types affect bourbon aging and flavor development. Brough Brothers Master Distiller Bryson Yarbrough managed the production process, including barrel selection, stave preparation, and monitoring to ensure each whiskey achieved a unique flavor profile.
Hands-On Learning and Industry Advancement
According to Dr. Marcus Bernard, dean of the College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources, “This collaboration exemplifies the type of hands-on learning and real-world application that makes Kentucky State’s fermentation and distillation sciences program unique. Our students are gaining invaluable experience while contributing to advancements in Kentucky’s signature industry.” Students participated in sensory evaluations, chemical analyses, and data collection as part of the project, aligning with KSU’s goal of preparing workforce-ready graduates for the spirits industry.
Innovation and Tradition Driving Bourbon Education
Victor Yarbrough, CEO of Brough Brothers Distillery, highlighted the partnership’s importance: “Working with Kentucky State University allows us to combine traditional distilling expertise with cutting-edge research. This partnership opens new possibilities for flavor development while providing students with direct exposure to the bourbon industry.” Proceeds from the 1886 Select collection will fund ongoing research in fermentation and distillation sciences at KSU, ensuring the collaboration continues to benefit students and the industry.
Supporting Workforce Development and Industry Growth
Kentucky State University offers an undergraduate certificate in fermentation and distillation sciences and provides extension workshops in home brewing and distillation for the community. More than 80 students have participated in the program to date, many completing internships at breweries and distilleries across Kentucky. The 1886 Select project further strengthens the connection between academia and industry, delivering valuable insights on wood stave influence and contributing to the innovation of bourbon production.
