The initiative launches with a short film titled The Taste, part of the brand’s ongoing “Unphorgettable” campaign, and also teases a future limited-edition whisky release.
Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky has announced a new collaboration with award-winning actor Willem Dafoe, marking the first partnership of its kind in the distillery’s history.
“The Taste” Film Debuts Globally
The cinematic short film follows Dafoe’s exploration to define Laphroaig’s uniquely bold taste. Inspired by unusual episodes from his own life, the film includes humorous fan descriptions of the whisky submitted by Friends of Laphroaig. According to the brand, The Taste is intended as a celebration of both Dafoe’s distinctive character and the singular qualities of Laphroaig.
Historical Legacy Meets Modern Collaboration
Laphroaig’s connection to film dates back to the 1950s, when distillery owner Bessie Williamson transformed the malting floor into a community cinema for island residents. Continuing this legacy, Senior Whisky Maker Sarah Dowling worked closely with Dafoe on The Taste. “When we tried to imagine Laphroaig as a human being, we immediately thought of Willem Dafoe. He is the very embodiment of our bold and distinctive spirit,” said Dowling.
Limited-Edition Whisky in Development
As part of the partnership, Dafoe and Dowling are collaborating on a limited-edition Laphroaig release, set for launch in 2026. The whisky is currently maturing and will showcase the distillery’s signature combination of peat, smoke, salt, and subtle sweetness.
Launch Celebrations in London and Beyond
To mark the debut of The Taste, Laphroaig temporarily renamed The Barley Mow pub in Mayfair, London, to “The Barley Dafoe” from September 22–25, 2025. Guests were able to sample a one-of-a-kind cocktail, Opposite Island, crafted to reflect the spirit of the collaboration. The cocktail will also be available at select bars worldwide in the coming months.
