The pioneering Master Blender concludes a monumental tenure that established the legendary Cigar Blend category and shaped modern finished bourbon.

WASHINGTON, D.C.Jos. A. Magnus & Co. has announced the retirement of legendary Master Blender Nancy Fraley, concluding a historic career that fundamentally helped define contemporary American whiskey blending and finishing.

At Jos. A. Magnus & Co., Fraley was central to establishing the brand’s award-winning house style, engineering an artful, European-inspired blending approach that now serves as the permanent foundation of the distillery’s corporate identity.

Most notably, Fraley is credited with pioneering an entirely new spirits classification through the release of the Magnus 2016 Cigar Blend Bourbon—the first commercialized whiskey of its kind specifically calibrated to complement premium tobacco. Furthermore, her introduction of an intricate triple-cask finishing technique (utilizing Sherry, Cognac, and Armagnac casks) has since altered the manufacturing trajectory of the wider premium bourbon category.

Her departure represents a seamless operational continuity. The structural framework, blending nosing panels, and sourcing standards she built remain permanently embedded in the Jos. A. Magnus production process. Her blending philosophy will continue uninterrupted under the leadership of Head Distiller Will Fabry, who has worked tightly alongside Fraley for years safeguarding the inventory’s maturation curves.
