Bourbon Lens Thoughts
When we reviewed the New Riff’s Malted Rye Whiskey in 2022, we were blown away. While those limited time offerings were different expressions than the Malted Rye Whiskey that will be joining the core lineup, the excitement around this release should be high. Our interests were piqued with malted rye since trying Old Portero many years ago. Seeing someone like New Riff join the conversation is very exciting.
Full Press Release: New Riff Malted Rye Whiskey
New Riff’s Malted Rye Whiskey joined the distillery’s core lineup almost two years ago — and it continues to earn accolades at competitions across the U.S. Would you be interested in more information about this unique rye?
Having already earned gold at the 2022 SFWSC, gold at the 2021 Barleycorn Awards and double gold in the 2022 Barleycorn Awards, New Riff’s Malted Rye just earned double gold distinction in the inaugural ABV Network’s Key West Invitational Whiskey Awards. Judges for the invitation-only event gave New Riff Malted Rye the fourth-highest overall score, as well as category wins for Best Bottled-in-Bond and Best Under $60 MSRP.
Bottled-in-bond without chill filtration, New Riff’s Malted Rye is made with 100% malted rye grain and aged 6 years. Malted rye is rye grain that has undergone the malting process, during which grain is moistened and begins to germinate, creating enzymes in the seed that convert starches to sugars. Nearly any grain can be malted, although barley is the most common, and the process alters and refines the flavor. When the distillery mashed its first batch of malted rye whiskey in December 2014, they weren’t sure what to expect. Inspired by an early whiskey mentor who described 100% malted rye as his favorite whiskey — New Riff set about making their own.
Malted Rye is available across New Riff’s distribution footprint at a suggested retail price of $59.99.
