Iconic Japanese Whisky Returns to Its Original 500ml Size in the U.S. to Mark Four Decades of a Cult-Favorite Expression.
Nikka Whisky is commemorating the 40th anniversary of its acclaimed Nikka From The Barrel with the global debut of Nikka From The Barrel Extra Marriage (51.4% ABV; 500ml; $69.99 SRP). The special release will arrive in select U.S. markets through importer Hotaling & Co., with only 6,900 bottles available nationwide. In addition, the brand will now offer Nikka From The Barrel in its original 500ml format to consumers across the U.S. for the first time since its introduction in 1985.
An Evolutionary Expression of Nikka’s Blending Artistry
Described as an evolution of the original, Nikka From The Barrel Extra Marriage undergoes double the marriage time—six months of additional maturation in used casks—to further harmonize its complex blend. “Nikka From The Barrel is a timeless whisky that has been embraced globally as an icon that represents Nikka’s masterful blending artistry,” said Emiko Kaji, Nikka Whisky Global Business Strategy Education & PR Leader. “With Extra Marriage, we seek to commemorate this acclaimed expression by revealing what more maturation, more marriage of the complex blend, can achieve.”
Nikka’s Legacy of Craft and Innovation
First released in 1985, Nikka From The Barrel was developed by Takeshi Taketsuru, nephew and adopted son of founder Masataka Taketsuru. The blend combines more than 100 batches of malt and grain whiskies, primarily from Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. Its distinctive “marriage” process—conducted at the Tochigi Aging Cellar—rests the blend in used puncheon casks for three months to enhance mellowness. For the new Extra Marriage edition, the process extends to six months, producing an even richer and more integrated profile.
Tasting Profile and Presentation
Nikka From The Barrel Extra Marriage is said to deliver a nose of mellow oak, chocolate, ripe fruit, and vanilla sweetness, followed by a rich, full-bodied palate with smooth texture and fine oak tannins. The finish offers gentle oak notes and subtle bitterness. The whisky is housed in the brand’s iconic square bottle designed by Taku Sato, reflecting the “small block of whisky” concept envisioned by Takeshi Taketsuru.
