It wasn’t long ago I was competing at Bardstown Bourbon Company’s World’s Top Whisk(e)y taster and Colin Blake from Moonshine University began to describe a test we would do on Irish, Japanese, and Scotch Whiskies. Since that time, my curiosity for World Whiskies has blossomed. While we have dipped our toes in some World Whiskies since the competition, the thirst for knowledge and different offerings is ever-consuming. This leads us to today’s Bourbon Lens review of Nikka Whisky Discovery Series Yoichi Aromatic Yeast and Miyagikyo Aromatic Yeast. Let’s dive in, shall we!

Jake’s Tasting Notes: Nikka Whisky Yoichi Aromatic Yeast:
Color: Champagne
Nose: Fresh Floral Notes meet your nose as your raise the glass, the perfume fades to ginger, and sour apple notes.
Palate: To start, I note this is a very clean distillate that is very dried fruit forward; apple and apricot. There is a slight touch of smoke, oak, and tart cherries that finish in the back of the palate.
Finish: the finish is medium in length and lingering with fruit.
Jake’s Tasting Notes: Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Aromatic Yeast:
Color: Champagne
Nose: Green apple, soft vanilla, and baking spices that light up the back part of your nose.
Palate: bright to start with vanilla and soft caramel. It moves to a quick hit of fruit as it lands on your mid palate; almost slightly sour and then finishes with spice and a drying effect that makes you reach for another pour.
Finish: Medium, very spice forward.
Closing Thoughts
These Nikka Discovery series are very tasty. These bottles will be extremely hard to find but would be one heck of a celebration bottle. If you asked me to pick my favorite I give the slight edge to the Yoicihi, but they are both killer whiskies.
