We know that Old Elk is putting out some of Greg Metze’s award-winning wheated distillate from his previous employer. But why stop there? Old Elk has joined the fray of finished bourbon and first up is their Old Elk Port Cask.
Just the facts: Old Elk Port Cask
Proof: 108.1
Age: Undisclosed
Mash bill: Undisclosed
Style: Bourbon Whiskey Finished
Barrel Finish: Port Cask
Jake’s tasting notes: Old Elk Port Cask
Nose: On the nose, a macadamia nut, plum, and a zest of lemon
Palate: The first sip lends to itself to the nuttiness that is highlighted in the nose. The second sip brings forth a bitter dark chocolate and the hint of lemon zest.
Finish: Rich, but not overpowering.
Closing Thoughts:
Old Elk Port Cask is a finished bourbon that’s absolutely tasty. It’s not overpowering and it rounds out the edges of what can sometimes be a harsh spirit to drink. This is a great example of how to use finishing to enhance the spirit versus overpowering it as well!
