Old Forester’s Downtown Louisville Distillery will Host a Bottle Signing with Elmer Lucille Allen on November 14 at 10 a.m.
Old Forester has announced a special single barrel whiskey release honoring Elmer Lucille Allen — the first African American chemist at Brown-Forman and a pioneering figure in the bourbon industry. The commemorative bottling recognizes Allen’s remarkable career, her groundbreaking work in science, and her lasting contributions to diversity and innovation in the spirits world.
A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion
Allen, now 94 years old, began her tenure at Brown-Forman in 1966, when few companies were hiring Black women in scientific roles. As a chemist, she analyzed grains such as corn and rye — essential building blocks of bourbon — for more than 30 years. Her expertise and commitment helped advance quality control and innovation at a time when the industry was beginning to modernize its processes.
Bottle Signing Event at Old Forester Distillery
To commemorate her achievements, Old Forester will host a bottle signing and reception with Elmer Lucille Allen at its Louisville distillery on November 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. Enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet Allen and purchase the limited-edition single barrel release, available exclusively at the distillery.
Old Forester Reflects on a Remarkable Career
“We are thrilled to recognize Elmer’s contributions, not only to Brown-Forman, but to the entire bourbon community,” said Melissa Rift, Old Forester’s Master Taster. “Her story continues to inspire, reminding us of the importance of inclusion, excellence, and perseverance.”
