Happy Bourbon Heritage Month!

Sometimes you just have to pick up a bottle of bourbon when you see it on a shelf. And that is just what I did here with this Maker’s Mark Private Selection – “Chocolate Thunder”. I have to admit, I haven’t had many Maker’s Mark Private Barrel picks. With one of the more unique ways to build your single barrel, you never know what you will get with all the stave interaction. Let’s dive in and find out!

Just the Facts:

  • Proof: 109.4
  • Age: Undisclosed
  • Style: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • Staves: 1 French Cuvee, 2 Maker’s Mark 46, 4 Roasted French Oak, and 3 Toasted French Spice.
  • Price: $69.99

Jake’s Tasting Notes: Maker’s Mark Private Barrel – Chocolate Thunder

Nose: French oak forward; big perfume notes followed by spice. You get notes of cracked pepper and chocolate after.

Palate: Milk chocolate, balanced with the perfume of the French Oak, creamy sweetness, and notes of nuttiness leading to almost peanut butter!

Finish: Creamy, medium-length finish

Closing Thoughts:

Overall this was a good barrel, but will it be a daily drinker? Probably not. I do see the creativity used in this Maker’s Mark Private Barrel. The unique stave configuration gave it big bold flavors which I believe will be great for winter.
