North Carolina Distillery Expands Into Growing Whiskey Category.
Southern Distilling Company has introduced a new, limited-edition expression, Southern Star American Single Malt Whiskey, marking the North Carolina distillery’s entry into the expanding American Single Malt category. Distilled and bottled in-house, the whiskey is aged for six years and bottled at 114.8 proof, highlighting the distillery’s craftsmanship and bold flavor approach.
Award-Winning Distillery Expands Its Portfolio
The launch follows Southern Distilling Company’s recognition as the 2025 Distillery of the Year by the American Distilling Institute (ADI), receiving the Bubble Cap Award for excellence in innovation and quality. Co-founder and CEO Pete Barger said, “We’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to release our American Single Malt. After hosting a tasting event in July with Brewzle and hearing the overwhelming response from whiskey enthusiasts, we knew it was time for Southern Star to make its mark on the category.”
Tasting Notes and Flavor Profile
Southern Star American Single Malt Whiskey features an amber hue and delivers aromas of sweet mint, toasted oak, warm grass, light floral notes, and rich caramel. On the palate, the whiskey presents burnt honey sweetness and woody depth, finishing with bitter dark chocolate for a layered and lingering experience. The 750ml bottle is priced at $49.95.
Limited Release Availability
This release is available beginning September 19 at the Southern Distilling Company Tasting Room in Statesville, North Carolina, before reaching local ABC stores in the following weeks. The distillery continues to build its reputation as a leader in high-quality whiskey production and innovation.
Supporting the Growth of American Single Malt
In addition to its own releases, Southern Distilling Company became the first contract distiller to offer bulk American Single Malt whiskey production to clients when the category was formally recognized in December 2024. With capacity to produce and age over 20,000 barrels annually, the distillery supports both new and established brands entering the market.
