The latest installment in WhistlePig’s collectible Boss Hog series draws inspiration from Ancient Egypt with a rye whiskey finished in barrels seasoned with Egyptian black honey and tiger nuts.

WhistlePig Whiskey is taking its annual Boss Hog series in a new direction with The Boss Hog XIII: The Golden Pharaoh, a limited-edition straight rye whiskey inspired by flavors and ingredients connected to Ancient Egypt.

The latest release marks the first time a Boss Hog expression has drawn inspiration from the African continent. According to WhistlePig, the concept began with research into a tiger nut cake recipe found carved into an ancient Egyptian tomb dating back more than 3,000 years.

The WhistlePig team recreated the recipe at its farm in Vermont and used the resulting flavor combination as inspiration for a first-of-its-kind whiskey finishing process. The rye is finished in barrels seasoned with Egyptian black honey and tiger nuts, creating a profile that combines the spice of rye with darker, sweeter flavors.

A Unique Finish for a Single Barrel Rye

The Boss Hog XIII begins as straight rye whiskey aged in new American oak before undergoing its unusual finishing process. Egyptian black honey—known as Asal Eswed—is actually sugarcane molasses rather than traditional bee honey. Tiger nuts, meanwhile, are edible tubers with flavors often compared to almonds or coconut.

Both ingredients have historical connections to Egyptian cuisine and culture, where they were used as food, medicine and ritual offerings.

“We recreated the recipe on our farm and fell in love with the flavor combination,” said Meghan Ireland, Head Blender at WhistlePig. “That led us to experiment with the finishing for this year’s The Boss Hog to see what those flavors could do to Rye whiskey.”

The resulting whiskey is bottled at proof and features a rich profile designed to retain the underlying character of the rye.

What Does The Golden Pharaoh Taste Like?

WhistlePig describes The Boss Hog XIII: The Golden Pharaoh as having a rich, earthy sweetness with aromatic depth.

The nose brings brown sugar, cinnamon and toasted almond, with pastry-like characteristics. On the palate, deep molasses leads into lighter honey notes, while baking spice and black pepper maintain the whiskey’s rye character.

The finish shifts toward toasted almond and fresh oatmeal, creating a softer conclusion to the spicy and sweet profile.

A Collectible Bottle Fit for a Pharaoh

As with previous Boss Hog releases, the presentation is an important part of the experience. Each bottle features a pewter topper inspired by King Tut and the Golden Pharaoh, with Eyes of Horus incorporated into the design.

WhistlePig is also producing a limited number of bottles with an exceptionally rare gold topper, giving collectors another variation to seek out.

The Boss Hog XIII: The Golden Pharaoh is available for presale ahead of its broader launch. The limited release carries a suggested retail price of $599.99 and will be available beginning September 30, 2026, through WhistlePig’s website, The Vault in Kentucky, and select bars, restaurants and retailers.

With its single-barrel format, barrel-strength presentation and unusual finishing process, The Golden Pharaoh continues WhistlePig’s approach of using the Boss Hog series as a platform for experimentation while maintaining the collectible nature of the annual release.

For whiskey collectors, the combination of high-proof rye, Egyptian-inspired ingredients and limited-edition presentation makes The Boss Hog XIII one of the more unconventional releases in the 2026 whiskey calendar.
