Limited Release Features Uniquely Smoked Malt with Subtle Smokiness that Nods to Classic BBQ Pit Flavors.
Bulleit Frontier Whiskey has announced Bulleit Bourbon Mesquite Smoked Malt Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, a limited-time release featuring an experimental mashbill that omits rye. The expression marks the first time a Bulleit Bourbon has removed rye from its traditional recipe.
The bourbon is produced using 65% corn, 30% mesquite wood-smoked malt, and 5% malted barley. A portion of the malted barley is smoked over mesquite wood during the malting process before fermentation and distillation. The brand emphasized that no artificial flavors are added.
Aged for Six Years, Bottled at 93 Proof
First distilled in November 2018, the whiskey was aged a minimum of six years at the Bulleit Distilling Co. before being bottled in Fall 2025. It is bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV).
According to the company, the flavor profile includes caramelized sugar and mesquite smoke on the nose, followed by sweet vanilla, oak, and subtle smokiness on the palate, with a lingering finish.
“It’s important to note that while this release is a first-of-its-kind spirit for the brand, it is not a flavored whiskey,” said Phil Gelineau, Whiskey R&D Manager at Bulleit. “The subtle smokiness comes from the mesquite wood-smoked malt used in the mashbill.”
Brand Commentary and Positioning
Brian Blackiston, Brand Manager at Diageo for Bulleit Frontier Whiskey, said the release reflects the brand’s continued experimentation with grains and production techniques while maintaining Kentucky Straight Bourbon standards.
The expression is positioned as a bourbon designed to pair with barbecue, though it is intended to be enjoyed neat, over ice, or in cocktails.
One-Time, Limited Availability
Bulleit Bourbon Mesquite Smoked Malt is a one-time release available beginning March 2, 2026, with limited nationwide distribution. The suggested retail price is $49.99 for a 750mL bottle.
