November 11, 2024 | Bardstown, KY – The Don’t Trash Glass program has partnered with Barton 1792 Distillery. This distillery is Bardstown’s oldest continuously operating establishment and a member of the Sazerac Company family. The partnership aims to advance glass recycling efforts in Kentucky. This collaboration focuses on recovering glass bottles used in bourbon production. The goal is to divert these bottles from landfills and transform them into new glass products. This supports a circular economy.
The Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) and Glass King Recovery & Recycling founded Don’t Trash Glass. It encourages bars, restaurants, and local businesses to participate in sustainable glass collection. The collected glass is processed into cullet. This recycled glass material is ready for manufacturing new bottles. It supports a fully closed-loop recycling system.
Sustainable Collaboration with Barton 1792 Distillery
“Barton 1792 is committed to exploring sustainable practices,” stated Lonny Bess, Plant General Manager at Barton 1792 Distillery. “Joining Don’t Trash Glass enables us to minimize waste by recycling our glass bottles right here in Kentucky.”
The program first launched in Phoenix, Arizona in 2018. It has expanded steadily since then. Kentucky and Colorado were added in 2024 after successful pilots in Chicago and other areas. Don’t Trash Glass collaborates with regional suppliers like Ardagh. This partnership keeps more glass out of landfills. It fosters a green solution for glass manufacturing.
Supporting Kentucky’s Recycling Goals
“Partnerships like these make a measurable impact on regional recycling,” noted Scott DeFife, president of GPI. “Working with Barton 1792 and Sazerac enables us to help them meet sustainability goals while fostering a circular recycling solution for Kentucky’s glass industry.”
Rose King, COO of Glass King Recovery & Recycling, highlighted the program’s community-focused approach: “We’re excited to work with local Kentucky businesses interested in adopting sustainable glass recycling solutions.”
