Bourbon Lens Thoughts:
Recently, we were approached by the Balas Brothers regarding their project documenting the remarkable origin story of a (once “underground”) whiskey movement occurring in New York State. The film, entitled “Fire, Water & Grain: The Story of Empire Rye” tells a cohesive story of the secretive and collaborative efforts of two handfuls of whiskey distillers in New York. The film looks at the history of distilling in America, especially New York; the pains, perils and triumphs of distilling rye grain; and what’s in store for the future of rye whiskey in New York and across America. The storytelling is impressive visually, features genuine interviews with those who got their hands and stills “gummed up” in rye, and highlights insightful viewpoints from the leading experts in distilling rye.
The full press release can be found just below. We thank Ryan and Alec Balas for giving us this early look at the film and highly recommend this beautiful film to any whiskey lover.
