Experimental Series Showcases Sweet Mash Process

The Jack Daniel Distillery has announced the release of Distillery Series Selection #15, a limited-edition Sweet Mash Tennessee Straight Whiskey. This release highlights a unique stage of the distillery’s annual process, in which sweet mash is used at the beginning of each distilling season before the standard sour mash method is established for the remainder of production.

It’s All in the Details

Selection #15 features the same, traditional mashbill as all Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskeys: 80% corn, 12% malted barley, and 8% rye. The whiskey was barreled in 2016 in new charred white oak and aged for nearly nine years on the top floors of Tract 2 barrelhouses at the Jack Daniel Distillery. It is bottled at 117 proof (58.5% ABV).

Flavor Profile and Tasting Notes

According to Jack Daniel’s, the sweet mash process, extended barrel age, and warehouse location result in a whiskey with “rich butterscotch notes and undertones of pecan, berry and caramel.” The high-proof expression is designed to showcase additional depth and complexity within the brand’s experimental lineup.

Master Distiller’s Perspective

“Our Distillery Series has experimented with every step in the whiskey making process from grain bill to barreling, and this release showcases yet another lever that we can pull and tweak here at the Jack Daniel Distillery,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller. “What excites me about this release is the complexity and richness that has emerged from a little extra time in the right places in our barrelhouses.”

Release Details and Availability

Hand-selected by Whiskey Taster and Quality Control Manager Kathy Thurmond, Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Sweet Mash Tennessee Straight Whiskey will be sold exclusively in Tennessee and at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop in Lynchburg beginning this month. It will be offered in 375ml bottles at a suggested retail price of $44.99.
