JSLMA and Produces Like The House of Suntory Continue to Combat of Misleading Japanese Whisky Labels
The Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) has introduced a new logo to reinforce its “Standards for Labeling Japanese Whisky,” first established in February 2021. The move aims to enhance recognition of Japanese whisky both domestically and internationally. The logo, which will appear on products that meet the industry standards, is designed to help consumers distinguish Japanese whisky from other types. This action represents a significant step in the JSLMA’s ongoing efforts to establish legally binding definitions for the category.
New Logo Design to Raise Awareness of Japanese Whisky

The new logo prominently features the letters “JW,” surrounded by “JAPANESE WHISKY” and “JSLMA,” the association responsible for the standards, inscribed on a whisky cask. The logo’s design is meant to symbolize the authenticity and heritage of Japanese whisky, ensuring consumers can easily identify products that meet the JSLMA’s stringent requirements. The trademark application for this logo has been submitted to the Japan Patent Office, with plans for international trademark filings in the future.
Steps Toward Legal Codification of Japanese Whisky Standards
Alongside the new logo, JSLMA is taking significant steps toward the legal codification of its whisky standards. The association is working towards securing Geographical Indication (GI) status for “Japanese Whisky” and consulting with Japan’s National Tax Agency to establish “Labeling Standards for the Manufacturing Process and Quality of Japanese Whisky.” These actions are part of the JSLMA’s broader initiative to ensure the integrity and global recognition of Japanese whisky.
Implications for the Future of Japanese Whisky Industry
This move to formalize and reinforce labeling standards is seen as a crucial phase in shaping the future of Japanese whisky. If successful, it will not only provide a clear framework for consumers but also further elevate the prestige of Japanese whisky on the global stage.
