Ground-to-Glass Craftsmanship in the High Desert
As a member of the Estate Whiskey Alliance and holder of a Nevada estate distillery license, Minden Mill produces its whiskey using 100% estate-grown barley, malted on site. Water is sourced from an onsite well just 50 steps from the distillery, fed by Sierra Nevada snowpack and filtered naturally through granite. The spirit is fermented with M1 yeast and distilled in dual copper Forsyth stills, hand-hammered in Speyside, Scotland. Unlike traditional steam heating, Minden Mill uses thermal oil-heated calandria systems to simulate direct-fire distillation for a more complex flavor profile.
Aged for Five Years in Climate-Controlled Rickhouses
The whiskey matures for five years in a mix of Oloroso sherry, ex-bourbon, and American oak barrels, along with re-charred wine and sherry butts. The Rickhouses are climate-controlled to mirror conditions in Speyside, Scotland, preserving barrel integrity despite Nevada’s low humidity. This precise aging process allows for proper expansion and contraction of the whiskey in the wood and consistent evaporation levels that concentrate flavor.
A New Chapter in American Single Malt
“Minden Mill has the unique opportunity to help introduce the U.S. consumer to the American Single Malt Whiskey category,” said Master Distiller Joe O’Sullivan. “This is a true representation of a single estate whiskey, highlighting the unique terroir of Nevada’s high desert.” Prior to founding Minden Mill, O’Sullivan apprenticed under Steven McCarthy, a pioneer in American Single Malt whiskey. Minden Mill American Single Malt is non-chill filtered, bottled at 94 proof, and features notes of fig, caramel, cherry tobacco, and honeycomb. It is now available nationwide for $60 and online at mindenmill.com.
