New documentary chronicles the 156-year history of Old Forester.

Produced by the Balas Brothers of Brooklyn, the film features rare archival footage and interviews that provide an in-depth look at the legacy of one of America’s oldest whiskey brands.

Film Release Coincides With the Return of Old Forester 1924

The documentary’s release aligns with the return of Old Forester 1924, the brand’s 10-year-old age-stated bourbon from the Whiskey Row series. The expression honors a pivotal Prohibition-era moment when Old Forester acquired barrels from distilleries forced to close and bottled the whiskey under its own name. Old Forester was able to continue operating during Prohibition due to a federal medicinal whiskey permit.

A Story Rooted in American Whiskey History

“We’re honored to share the story of Old Forester, founded by George Garvin Brown in 1870, with a wider audience,” said Caleb Trigo, Assistant Master Distiller. Old Forester is the founding brand of Brown-Forman, which remains controlled by the Brown family and has grown into one of the world’s largest spirits companies.

The Whiskeyland Perspective

Whiskeyland is a documentary series focused on the people, places, and histories behind American whiskey through story-driven filmmaking. “What excited us most about making this episode was the chance to dive deep into America’s oldest whiskey brand, Old Forester, and bring the archives and tales to life, only to realize that, in the process, we were becoming part of that same tradition,” said filmmaker Ryan Balas.

Where to Watch and Whiskey Availability

The Old Forester episode launched today on the Whiskeyland TV YouTube channel, with streaming availability on platforms including Amazon Prime, Relay, and Tubi coming soon. Old Forester 1924 is bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof) and is available beginning January 15 at the Old Forester Distillery, via shop.oldforester.com for shipping to eligible states (D.C., KY, NE, NH, ND), and at participating retailers.
