John Campbell’s First Release for Sespe Creek Distillery is a Bold, Fiery New Whiskey

Sespe Creek Distillery Unleashes Warbringer Big Cockerel Aguardiente

Oxnard-based Sespe Creek Distillery has announced the release of Warbringer Big Cockerel Aguardiente, an unaged white whiskey that marks the first creation under the direction of renowned Scotch distiller John Campbell. The release comes six months after Campbell’s surprising appointment as Master Distiller and Chief Operating Officer of the California distillery.

John Campbell Begins a New Chapter with Bold First Release

Known for his legacy at Laphroaig, John Campbell emphasizes the importance of innovation in his new role. “Having the freedom to innovate was very important to me – and I knew Sespe Creek was different,” said Campbell. “Big Cockerel is a bold drink, and I’m excited to share it with everyone. This is just the beginning at Sespe Creek, there is so much more to come.”

A Revival of California’s Fiery Heritage

Warbringer Big Cockerel Aguardiente draws inspiration from the historic spirit known as aguardiente, which has deep cultural roots in both colonial Mexico and California’s Gold Rush era. Historically used as a term for locally distilled beverages, aguardiente was once common in early Los Angeles and throughout Alta California.

A Unique Mash Bill and Traditional Copper Pot Distillation

This new release is twice distilled in copper pot stills and crafted from a distinctive mash bill: 60% mesquite-smoked corn, 15% fire-toasted corn, and 25% malted rye. Bottled at 98 proof (49% ABV), Big Cockerel delivers a rich profile at an accessible $35 per 750ml bottle.

Complex Tasting Notes with Local Character

The whiskey features a nose of toasted pumpkin seed, graham cracker, and mesquite. On the palate, drinkers can expect a velvety texture with notes of molé, mezcal, mesquite grilled chicken, and sweet potato. The finish is dry and lingering, highlighted by flavors of smoked peanut brittle and flan.

Available Now in California and Online

Initial distribution of Warbringer Big Cockerel Aguardiente includes 2,000 six-pack cases available across retail locations in California and nationwide via the distillery’s website, Warbringerbourbon.com.
