La Pulga Tequila just announced the release of a new limited-edition Reposado Double Barrel expression, finished in barrels previously used to age Still Austin Whiskey Co.’s Red Corn Bourbon.
The collaboration brings together two Texas-based spirits brands while combining traditional tequila production from Jalisco, Mexico, with the influence of Texas bourbon maturation.
A Double-Barrel Approach to Reposado Tequila
The limited-edition release begins with 100% Blue Weber agave sourced from the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. After aging for seven months as a traditional reposado tequila, the spirit undergoes a secondary maturation in freshly emptied Still Austin Bottled in Bond Red Corn Bourbon barrels.
The additional barrel finishing is designed to add layers of flavor and complexity while preserving the agave-forward character of the tequila. According to La Pulga, the finishing process introduces subtle spice notes and sweet red corn influences derived from the bourbon barrels.
Sarah Castillo, co-founder of La Pulga Tequila, said the collaboration was inspired by her admiration for Still Austin’s craftsmanship and the popularity of its Red Corn Bourbon releases. She noted that the project creates a connection between two award-winning Texas spirits brands while maintaining the distinctive identity of La Pulga Tequila.
Packaging Highlights Cultural and Regional Connections
As with other releases in the portfolio, the bottle features La Pulga’s signature alebrije-inspired artwork. For this expression, the label showcases a red serpent, symbolizing transformation, creativity, and the cultural connection between Mexico and Texas. The design also serves as a nod to the red snake imagery featured on Still Austin’s Bottled in Bond Red Corn Bourbon packaging.
The release also marks the first time La Pulga has incorporated a red keepsake medallion around the neck of the bottle, creating an additional collectible element for enthusiasts.
Product Details and Availability
La Pulga Tequila Reposado Double Barrel is bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV) and produced in small batches. The tequila is crafted using only three ingredients: 100% Blue Weber agave, time, and craftsmanship.
The limited-edition release is available at select retailers with a suggested retail price of $69.99. According to the company, the expression is a one-time release and will not be produced again once current inventory is depleted.
Founded in Fort Worth, Texas, La Pulga Spirits produces a portfolio that includes tequila, mezcal, and sotol, with a brand identity centered around shared cultural experiences and community. The company’s motto, “The Spirit We Share,” reflects its inspiration from the traditional pulgas, or flea markets, found throughout Mexico and the southern United States.
