The release highlights Stranahan’s approach to extended, high-altitude aging and its continued exploration of cask finishes within the American single malt category.

Stranahan’s American Single Malt Whiskey has introduced Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old, the oldest expression released by the Colorado distillery to date. Finished in rare Tokaji wine casks from Hungary, the new whiskey expands the Mountain Angel collection alongside the existing 10- and 12-year-old expressions.

14 Years of Aging Across Three Different Cask Types

Handcrafted from grain to bottle at Stranahan’s Denver distillery, Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old is made from 100% malted barley and undergoes three stages of maturation. The whiskey spends its first 10 years in new charred American white oak barrels, followed by three years and three months in Cognac casks and a final nine-month finish in Tokaji wine casks. Aged approximately one mile above sea level, the whiskey experiences significant evaporation, known as the angel’s share, before being cut with Eldorado Spring water from the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

“Our Mountain Angel family reflects more than 22 years of pioneering the American single malt category and our commitment to showing what aging a mile above sea level can achieve,” said Stranahan’s Head Blender Justin Aden. “In this bottle, Hungarian Tokaji casks beautifully complement Stranahan’s naturally fruity character, adding a richness to the mouthfeel that balances the oak spice developed over 14 total years of aging.”

Tasting Notes and Tokaji Cask Influence

Bottled at 94.6 proof, Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old features aromas of candied apricot, orange marmalade, prune and raisin. The palate brings together baked apple and stone fruits with vanilla, caramel, rich tobacco and lingering pepper. Stranahan’s describes the mouthfeel as velvety, with tropical notes, rich chocolate and drying oak spice rounding out the finish. The Tokaji cask finish contributes a balance of sweetness and acidity to the whiskey’s extended oak and Cognac maturation.

Mountain Angel Collection Expands to Three Age Statements

The new 14-year-old joins two existing Mountain Angel expressions, each showcasing a different approach to maturation. Mountain Angel 10-Year-Old highlights aging in new charred American white oak, while the 12-Year-Old receives a Port cask finish. The addition of the Tokaji-finished 14-year-old gives the collection three distinct expressions and demonstrates how extended aging and different finishing casks influence Stranahan’s American single malt whiskey.
