New Release Combines Bourbon and American Single Malt.

Virginia Distillery Co. has announced the launch of “The Split Barrel Project,” a new whiskey series intended to bridge Kentucky bourbon and American Single Malt whiskey. The inaugural release, Split Barrel Project #1, is described by the company as a first-of-its-kind blend combining the two whiskey categories.

Project #1 is a 50/50 blend of Kentucky Straight Bourbon sourced from Bardstown Bourbon Company and American Single Malt produced by Virginia Distillery Co.

Blend Composition and Maturation

The release combines a four-year-old Kentucky bourbon made from a mash bill of 75% corn, 15% rye, and 10% malted barley with a five-year-old American Single Malt whiskey crafted from 100% malted barley.

According to the company, the American Single Malt component was aged exclusively in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. The resulting whiskey is bottled at 45% ABV in 700mL bottles with a suggested retail price of $44.99.

Flavor Profile and Positioning

Virginia Distillery Co. describes the whiskey as opening with aromas of warm oak, vanilla, and caramel. The palate reportedly features malt, stone fruit, and chocolate notes intended to balance bourbon sweetness with single malt character.

The company has positioned the release as an entry point for bourbon drinkers interested in exploring the growing American Single Malt category.

Company Commentary and Future Releases

Gareth Moore, CEO of Virginia Distillery Co., said, “The Split Barrel Project is unlike anything else on a back bar or retail shelf. We’re creating a gateway into American Single Malt by meeting bourbon drinkers where they are, while still showcasing the depth and character that defines our whisky. It’s a bold step forward in growing the category.”

Future editions of The Split Barrel Project are expected to feature collaborations with additional distilleries, each exploring different approaches to the format.

Launch and Availability

Split Barrel Project #1 (Bardstown) will launch in May 2026 in limited quantities through select retailers and online via Virginia Distillery Co.’s website.
