Hard Truth & Mellencamp Whiskey Release New Bottled in Bond Bourbon: “American Odd”

American Odd Sweet Mash Bourbon Whiskey is the fourth and final expression in the collaborative sweet mash whiskey series.

Hard Truth Distilling Co. and Mellencamp Whiskey Company have announced the release of American Odd Sweet Mash Bourbon Whiskey, the fourth and final expression in their collaborative four-part sweet mash whiskey series. Notably, American Odd marks the series’ first Bottled in Bond release. The whiskey is crafted by Hard Truth Master Distiller Bryan Smith in collaboration with Mellencamp Whiskey Co. founders Hud Mellencamp and Levi Collison.

Original John Mellencamp Artwork Highlights Bottle Design

Each bottle in the four-part series features original artwork by John Mellencamp. For this final release, the label takes its name from Mellencamp’s 2020 painting “American Odd,” which depicts themes of American farming. The painting uses house paint, oil, and charcoal on Masonite and measures 60” by 48”.

Crafted with 100% Indiana Grains and Bottled at 100 Proof

American Odd is distilled from a mash bill of 82% corn and 18% rye, all sourced from Indiana farmers. The grains include corn from Doug Miller, a fifth-generation farmer near the distillery, and rye from Dr. Duane Kuhlenschmidt. The bourbon is aged for four years in custom barrels designed by Independent Stave Co. and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). Smith noted the bourbon was designed to complement the series’ first release, Harvest Rye.

Flavor Profile: Cherry, Spice, and Oak Complexity

Tasting notes for American Odd describe a tawny appearance and a nose of caramel, clove, and ripe peach with custard. The palate opens with bright cherry, leading to coffee cake, spice, and vanilla frosting. The finish lingers with dark cherry, tobacco, black pepper, and soft oak.

Special Four-Pack Box Set Also Announced

For the first time, all four Mellencamp Whiskey expressions—Harvest Rye Sweet Mash Rye, Farmer’s Reserve, French Oak Harvest Rye, and American Odd—will be available in a decorative four-bottle box set. Priced at $299.99, the set will be sold exclusively at the Hard Truth Distillery while supplies last.

Supporting Sustainable Farming Through Grounded in Truth

A portion of proceeds from the Mellencamp Whiskey series supports small and independent farming through the Grounded in Truth initiative. The program’s first giving partner is Farm Aid, which helps fund resources for family farmers. “American Odd’s Bourbon mash bill was designed as a compliment to our partnership’s first release, Harvest Rye, and a nod to our farmer partners in Evansville and Rushville, Indiana,” said Smith.
