Buffalo Trace Distillery has led the charge for ultra-aged American whiskey and just debuted Eagle Rare 30, the oldest age-stated bourbon ever released by the distillery.

The 30-year expression represents a major milestone in the distillery’s exploration of extended maturation. Eagle Rare 30 comes on the heels of Diageo’s late 2025 release of Blade and Bow 30 Year.

A New Benchmark for Ultra-Aged Bourbon

Eagle Rare 30 builds on the foundation established by Eagle Rare 25, continuing the brand’s push into uncharted aging territory. Both expressions were matured in the distillery’s experimental Warehouse P, a purpose-built facility designed to test the limits of long-term bourbon aging.

Unlike traditional Kentucky aging environments, Warehouse P is engineered to better manage evaporation and oak extraction—two factors that often limit how long bourbon can mature without becoming overly tannic or dry.

According to Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley, the goal is not simply extended age, but controlled maturity.

About the Whiskey

Bottled at 101 proof, Eagle Rare 30 showcases the results of decades of careful monitoring and environmental control.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Baked cherry, caramel, brown sugar, honey, tobacco, and subtle smoke
  • Palate: Rich layers of aged stone fruit and caramel with a full, coating mouthfeel
  • Finish: Long, velvety, and evolving with refined oak and gentle smokiness

The result is a whiskey designed to highlight balance and complexity rather than overpowering oak—an ongoing challenge in ultra-aged bourbon.

Luxury Presentation and Ultra-Premium Positioning

Eagle Rare 30 is presented in a hand-blown crystal decanter, encased in a gold-plated eagle wing design with a sculpted glass eagle centerpiece. The packaging looks to mirror the rarity and ambition of the release.

With a suggested retail price of $12,500, the expression sits at the high end of even the ultra-luxury tier of American whiskey.

Auction Launch with Bonhams

To mark the release, Buffalo Trace is partnering with Bonhams for a high-profile auction featuring 15 curated lots. Highlights include:

  • The first and second bottles of Eagle Rare 30 ever produced
  • A complete Eagle Rare vertical (10, 12, 17, Double Eagle Very Rare, 25, and 30)
  • A luxury experience at Stagg Lodge, the distillery’s private on-site retreat

The auction opens April 24 and runs through May 8, 2026.

Limited Release Begins May 2026

Following the auction, Eagle Rare 30 will see a highly limited global release through Sazerac’s distribution network beginning in May 2026. Buffalo Traces Distillery notes that the expression completes the Eagle Rare portfolio, joining:

  • Eagle Rare 10
  • Eagle Rare 12
  • Eagle Rare 17 (BTAC)
  • Double Eagle Very Rare
  • Eagle Rare 25

Pushing the Boundaries of Bourbon

With Eagle Rare 30, Buffalo Trace continues to challenge long-held assumptions about bourbon maturation. By leveraging experimental environments like Warehouse P, the distillery is demonstrating that ultra-aged bourbon can achieve both depth and balance when carefully managed.
